This graceful bronze woman is individually handcrafted by Bandéou, a bronze artisan from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Using recycled bronze and the ancient lost-wax casting method, Bandéou creates each sculpture through a traditional, hands-on process. The lost-wax technique begins with forming the figure in wax, creating a mold around it, melting the wax away, and then casting molten bronze into the space left behind. The finished piece is then broken free from its mold and carefully refined and finished by hand.

The result is a piece that carries the subtle textures and variations of genuine handmade craftsmanship.

A Tradition Cast in Bronze

Lost-wax casting is an ancient method of metalworking that has been practiced for centuries across different cultures, including a rich tradition of bronze casting in West Africa.

Rather than being mass-produced in a factory, this sculpture is created through a labor-intensive process that combines traditional knowledge, artistic skill and individual craftsmanship.

The bronze itself is recycled, giving discarded metal new life as a piece of art.
